Just threw the plastic on today. Spinach is popping up under there. Fennel still going strong.

Oyster mushrooms fruiting today - on poplar logs innoculated early spring. The first flush. At least the first we've seen before the slugs and other critters got to them. Notice something has taken a bite out of one.

Lots of lettuce and kale!

Getting into the warmer weather. Not much longer for the cool weather crops. The tomatoes are looking good!

new mushroom logs and plants set out

Over the weekend (under a canopy in the yard as the nice rain was coming down) I innoculated 12 new poplar logs with oyster mushroom spawn (from Sharondale)...should provide a lot when they fruit this coming Fall. Thinking about covering with burlap and running some low-flow irrigation around them to keep moist through the Summer.

Yesterday, Amy set out into the beds some of the seedlings started in January...lettuce, kale, and others. We've also started more Spring veggie, herb, and flower seeds in the basement with a new heat mat...will be adding another lamp soon.

Mushrooms

Went out to Montpelier today. Cut some fresh tulip poplar logs with my Dad for oyster mushrooms. The sap has not risen into the trees yet. We loaded about ten good logs onto the wagon and hauled them out with the tractor. Brought them back to the City in my VW.

After stacking the logs in the shed, I decided to check the other old logs under the shrubs. Pleasant surprise - about 1/2 pound of fresh oysters!

Started some seed last weekend 01/29

life under plastic

Weather got up into the 50's over the weekend. We pulled the plastic back to find the plants hanging in there. Picked some Asian cabbage and cilantro. Still pretty good flavor. Arugula and spinach still small but doing ok. Broccoli heads not getting much bigger. Left the plastic off for a few days to let some good rain in. Back under cover now - cold again. Getting into the 20's at night this week.
